A key farmer in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipality Mr. Solomon Konor has been growing papayas of over 20 years. He was introduced to Sankofa Agbiotics, Triple Green and REMIN by Spence MS Ghana Ltd. in middle of 2020. Mr. Konor was looking for a new products to overcome his fruit drop problem, improve his soil and so increase his papayas both in quality and yield.
He currently grows 5 acres of Papaya so he decided to use the 3 products on just 1.5 acres leaving the balance as the control area. However in the control area with his normal products there was a high drop rate and small fruits – as shown in Figures 1 and 2. Also the leaves are a mixture of colours red and brown indicating lack of nutrients and some were being attacked by insects.
To overcome the soil nutrient deficiency he applied 2 applications of REMIN volcanic rock dust to each papaya in the trial area.
The papaya were sprayed every 2 weeks with Sankofa Agbiotics only for 3 months. Dilution of 100ml (or 1 sachet) with 15 litres of clean water and applied as a foliar application with a knapsack sprayer. One acre required 8-10 full knapsack tanks (depends on size of the papayas).
From month 4 onwards he applied a foliar spray every 2 weeks of 100ml Sankofa Agbiotics (or 1 sachet) with 100ml Triple Green diluted in 15 litres of water via his battery powered knapsack sprayer. This continues for a further 5 months until harvesting commences.
In the trial area there has been no fruit drop and as can be observed the fruit is larger in the treated area and look healthier and more resilient as shown in Figure 4 and 5.
Harvesting will commence in March 2021 and farmer Mr. Konor will be able to compare total yield per acre from both areas and determine the average fruit weight increase.
